Dumfries and Galloway Council has said it has been included in the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) Champion League Table for the first time.
The recognition is related to the region's commitment to using renewable forms of energy.
The local authority was put forward as the Scottish National representative, in the 20,000-100,000 population division.
Selected through a quantitative and qualitative process, the region will compete with finalists from other EU countries, with the potential of picking up an internationally recognised award. This year marks the first appearance of Scottish regions at the finals and the successful regions will receive their honours in Kassel, Germany at the RES Congress.
The inclusion of Dumfries and Galloway in the league table builds on the work that has been undertaken by local communities and supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council and Community Energy Scotland under the 100% RES project.
Ten local communities from Wanlockhead to Whithorn are developing Sustainable Energy Action Plans in a bid to reduce their reliance on fossil fuel and to help tackle fuel poverty.
Project Champion, Councillor Ian Carruthers said: "To progress through to the finals of the 100RES Championships is great for the people of Dumfries and Galloway. It is the perfect platform for the region to highlight our commitment to the 100% Renewable Energy Source project and how this can directly tackle fuel poverty and sustainability within local communities."
