Work has been completed on an £567,000 upgrade of the towpaths of the Forth and Clyde Canal.
Work was recently completed on the project by Scottish Canals and its partners at Sustrans, SPT, Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (WREN) and East Dunbartonshire Council. It included the upgrade of the busy 4.5km stretch between Kirkintilloch and the East Dunbartonshire boundary at Possil Marsh.
The new all-weather path, which will replace the previous whin dust route, forms an important part of the Sustrans national Cycle Network and is used extensively for both leisure and commuting by those from the local area and further afield.
Councillor Moir, Convener of the Council's Development & Infrastructure Committee and SPT member said: "Although I'm here on behalf of SPT and the Council today, I'm personally delighted to see this project completed as it means so much to the local community and the many people who now use this popular path.
"Over the last three years, SPT has, with our partner Councils, invested over £2m in cycling improvements and there is real evidence that this is making a positive impact.
"We need to continue to encourage people out of their cars and in this case show them how great their local outdoors is. This is a really pretty route and I'm sure it will be enjoyed by many visitors to the area for years to come."
