£450m Announced For Dundee Housing Projects

£450m is to be invested in building projects in Dundee, including an additional £84m to be spent on housing stock.

The news has been announced in the city council’s Capital Plans for 2013-17.

Ken Guild, Leader of the Administration said: "We are injecting over £450m into new capital projects in communities across the city. This will help protect jobs and stimulate the local economy over the next four years.

"This is a massive investment in new and refurbished facilities from schools to housing, from community facilities to roads, from social care facilities to leisure and sport.

"We will do everything possible to encourage local companies to bid for work on council contracts and provide jobs for local people.

"Along with the redevelopment of the Central Waterfront, these new facilities represent a positive statement of confidence in the future of our city."

Projects include a new three tier campus to replace Baldragon Academy, Sidlaw View Primary and Jessie Porter Nursery at a cost of £35m.

Work on a £33m new build replacement for Harris Academy will begin this year, while new primaries and community facilities in Coldside and Menzieshill will be built at a cost of £26m.

Construction is currently underway for the new £9m primary at Balgarthno.

£2m is also being spent on an extension to Barnhill Primary.

Dundee City Council will also be investing in energy efficient gas central heating systems, new kitchens and bathrooms and thermal insulation.

Other projects include the £7m Whitfield Life Services building, while there will be a £1.2m upgrade for the Whitetop Centre.

£9.6m is to be spent on road improvements.

The new V&A museum will be built at a total cost of £45m.

£9.7m has also been included to help deliver the refurbishment of Dundee railway station.

Finance spokesman Willie Sawers added: "These are exciting projects in our continuing commitment to improve facilities for the future which will directly help the regeneration of our local communities across the city."
