South Lanarkshire Council has confirmed plans for a £2.7m primary school have been given the go-ahead.
The new school in Lamington will be built following the demolition of the old building.
The primary school has been designed in a U-shape to enclose the playground and locate it away from public and vehicle access routes.
The new development will be a single storey building with two classrooms, both of which will be positioned on the south east corner to benefit from direct sunlight and views across the open countryside.
Traditional rural design has been reflected in the new school, which will be built using natural stone, slate and architectural details such as skews and mullions.
The school will also benefit from its own designated kitchen and dining area and small library.
The dining area is being developed so that it can act as the school's gym.
Councillor Hugh Dunsmuir, the chair of the council's Planning Committee, which approved the proposals at this week's meeting, said: "The new school will provide a vibrant, dynamic environment in which the children can learn.
"This approval confirms our commitment to our smaller rural primary schools and the role they play in the community.
"Thousands of pupils have already had their school lives transformed thanks to the Primary Schools Modernisation Programme and I am sure everyone in the Lamington primary school community is excited by this news."
