Farrans has been named the Bridge Contractor of the Year at the NCE Bridges Awards 2025, with judges particularly noting the firm's successful delivery of three technically complex moving bridges in the past 12 months.
Among these celebrated projects is Glasgow's Govan to Partick Bridge, one of Europe’s longest opening pedestrian crossings, which opened to the public in September 2024.
The Govan to Partick Bridge, a significant infrastructure achievement for Glasgow, reconnects the communities of Govan and Partick across the River Clyde. This innovative swing bridge, designed for pedestrians and cyclists, opened on the same day as the world's largest rolling bascule bridge, the Gull Wing Bridge in Suffolk. The third project contributing to the award was the Herring Bridge in Great Yarmouth, delivered in a joint venture with BAM, a key infrastructure project for Norfolk.
Judges praised Farrans for delivering "major, technically complex bridge projects in the UK showcasing innovation, collaboration and sustainability." They highlighted the company's "leadership in civil engineering, with a continued focus on transport infrastructure and long-term investment in people and sustainable growth." The Gull Wing Bridge also received individual recognition, winning the 'Road Bridge of the Year' category on the night.
According to Farrans, their success stemmed from focusing on key principles including innovation, collaboration, robust supply chain relationships, community engagement, and sustainability, enabling the construction of "three world-class infrastructure projects which are delivering significant, tangible benefits for their regions."
NCE editor Gavin Pearson underscored the importance of the awards, stating: "Bridges have epitomised civil engineering for centuries and these awards recognise the best of the best as the industry continues to enhance its social, environmental and economic impact. From incredible work in maintaining historic bridges, right through to innovative new bridge concepts, our judges were impressed with the remarkable calibre and range of entries across the award categories, with the winners providing a terrific benchmark of best practice."
