A new £17m leisure facility is planned for Ayshire to replace the 1975-built Magnum centre.
The Glasgow Evening Times has reported on the plans for the centre in Irvine.
North Ayrshire Council spokesman on communities and culture, Councillor Alan Hill, said the centre has high running costs due to its age, and visitor numbers have fallen, so approval was given three years ago for it to close.
He said: "A new £17.3m leisure centre is planned as the corner-stone of a £30m Irvine Town Centre regeneration programme.
"The new centre will provide long-term, sustainable leisure provision for the area and will play a key part in the regeneration of Irvine town centre.
"North Ayrshire Council will consider designs for the new centre later this year ahead of a full planning application being submitted."
The new centre will boast a 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool with spectator seating, a sports hall, a fitness suite and a café.
