Labour councillors in Aberdeen have said they will re-consider whether to have a third road bridge over the River Don.
Supporters of the project say the bridge will ease congestion, but Labour councillors have long been opposed to the route.
The Tillydrone- Grandholm bridge is supported by Conservative and Independent councillors in Aberdeen and, following talks with them, Labour agreed to look at the idea again.
Aberdeen council is run as a coalition between Labour, Conservative and Independent members.
Liberal Democrat MP Malcolm Bruce said the re-think was just a ploy to send the scheme "into the long grass".
Residents who oppose the plans have threatened legal action in the past.
Council officials back the plans and minister ruled earlier this year that compulsory purchase orders could be used to create the controversial crossing.
