Construction has been launched on the supermarket part of a development between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Building the Asda at Armadale Station Development is set to cost £10.5m.
The new store, set to open later this year, will have a gross floor area of about 40,000 sq ft and will bring with it 150 full and part time jobs.
Supermarket bosses promised to help the long-term unemployed back into the workplace through their Local Employment Partnership scheme and a recruitment centre in Armadale will target local job seekers.
The plans are for a supermarket, a petrol station, car and bicycle parking facilities and recycling bins.
Local councillor John McGinty said the supermarket would be good news for young people who were out of work.
He said: "This heralds a significant investment in the town, as well as delivering jobs for local people. It is particularly excellent news for young people seeking employment in the town and we look forward, as West Lothian Council, to continue working with Asda."
Lisa Rooke, Asda's Property Communications Manager for Scotland, said: "We are delighted to be beginning construction of the supermarket in Armadale. Our proposals have enabled us to play a part in one of Scotland's largest regeneration projects. We believe that the new store can provide consumers with an improved choice on where to carry out their supermarket shopping, as well as bringing Asda’s quality products and famous low prices to the area."
