A 25,000 square foot supermarket is planned for an East Renfrewshire town.
Asda has won the tender for redeveloping the site of a disused health centre on a council-owned site that borders Church Street, Main Street and the River Levern in Barrhead.
If the supermarket giant gets planning permission, it has said it will invest more than £20m in the site, and bring hundreds of employment opportunities for local people, including 200 jobs during the construction of the store.
This is the latest regeneration development in the town and follows news of a £3.8m extension to Barrhead Sports Centre to create a new leisure and learning centre, Barrhead Steps.
A spokesman for Asda said the £20m redevelopment sum would include £800,000 set aside for integrating the supermarket with the town centre, including green space.
Tony Buchanan, East Renfrewshire Council’s Convener for Regeneration and Economic Development, said the announcement was "excellent news" for Barrhead, especially for people looking for work.
He said: "Over the next few years we can expect to see a real transformation in Barrhead town centre, with the £3.8m extension to Barrhead Sports Centre already announced and a number of investments across the town. My colleagues and I look forward to working with Asda over the coming months and fully support their commitment to working closely with the community and local businesses to make sure that their plans are well communicated and supported."
