As the gas leak incident at the Elgin / Rowan Viking installation in the North Sea continues the, Scottish Environment Secretary has total transparency.
Richard Lochhead said: "Any gas leak on an evacuated offshore installation is, of course, deeply worrying. Therefore it’s critical both Total and the UK Government ensure absolute transparency, with all information placed in the public domain. This should include not just details on the level of risk, but also how this is calculated.
"Responsibility for the marine environment rests with the Scottish Government. The gas condensate is expected to disperse naturally and – as the situation currently stands – environmental risks are minimal. However, we’re not complacent and are continually reviewing the situation.
"Scottish Ministers are being kept fully informed and regularly updated on the situation. Marine Scotland remains in close contact with the UK Government and Total, while I will continue to have regular dialogue with the company and UK Ministers."
The Scottish Government will work with other partners to take the action necessary to ensure that Scotland's economic and environmental interests are adequately protected.
Marine Scotland’s involvement includes providing and co-ordinating environmental advice and ensuring the fishing industry is aware.
