Construction Of New DJCAD Entrance To Commence

Work is set to begin on the construction of a new feature entrance to Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design as part of a major refurbishment of one of the UK’s top art colleges.

Once completed, the main entrance to DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee, will comprise a well-lit, glass-fronted structure extending towards the street and providing a welcoming and modern first impression for visitors.

This is the latest stage of the £2.8million first phase of a refurbishment which will provide leading-edge teaching and research facilities befitting a 21st century college of art and design with an international profile.

As well as providing a dedicated and consolidated entrance, the project will significantly improve disabled access to the buildings and simplify the process of navigating the famously labyrinth-like layout of DJCAD. Work is scheduled to be completed in June.

DJCAD comprises two buildings on the city's Perth Road - the Crawford Building, which first hosted classes in 1955, and the newer Matthew Building, which is situated immediately to the west of the older site. The buildings are linked by two walkways, with the main entrance to DJCAD currently located at the front of the Crawford Building.

Building of a new entrance at the foot of the Mathew Building will begin on Monday, January 16th. As well as significantly improving the appearance of the Matthew Building, it will bring considerable logistic advantages.

Professor Tom Inns, Dean of DJCAD, said: "This project demonstrates the University’s significant commitment to art and design teaching and research in the city of Dundee. It will raise the profile of DJCAD as the city moves towards the realisation of the V&A at Dundee vision."

The refurbishment of DJCAD reflects changes in academic activity and student numbers over the years. Some works have already taken place, including the installation of a new roof along the rear of the Crawford Building and building a new electricity sub station.

Significant internal work has also been undertaken with the re-designation of facilities to create enhanced studio, learning and teaching space.

The building of a new entrance will mark the most significant element of the project to date, and will give DJCAD an enhanced presence on Perth Road, significantly raise its visual profile, improve access, and help bring administration and management closer together to deliver a more integrated service.
