The installation of new shutters in the waiting areas at Kilmarnock Bus Station is the latest in a number of improvements to the bus station facilities in recent months.
Two security shutters have been installed in the waiting area to close off the Burns Mall shopping centre outside normal shop opening hours, but which will ensure that passengers still have full direct access to the bus station in the evenings.
Unveiling the shutters earlier this week, Councillor Jim Todd, Spokesperson for Community Safety said: "Kilmarnock Bus Station is the gateway into the town for many and East Ayrshire Council continues to work closely with partner agencies, Strathclyde Police, Stagecoach and Burns Mall security, to make the bus station a safe and pleasant environment for all passengers.
"These shutters are the perfect solution for providing access to the bus station in the evenings. There is now direct access to and from the bus station in the evenings, which is safe and secure, and fully accessible in the spirit of the Equality Act, 2010."
Hugh Colville, Operation Managers, Burns Mall welcomed the shutter installation. He said: "We’ve already seen a significant decline in antisocial behaviour incidents thanks to the improved lighting, increased CCTV surveillance and the presence of a dedicated Burns Mall security guard within the waiting room and I am confident that with these improved evening access arrangements this trend will continue."
