A new urban community park in Glasgow has been officially opened by the Lord Provost.
Molendinar Park in the north east of the city has seen the transformation of disparate vacant spaces into a new and vibrant park for all the community to enjoy.
The new £430,000 park is situated next to Royston Road and takes it name from the burn which runs through the site. It was along the Molendinar Burn that St Mungo founded his church in the 6th century and it is from this early settlement that Glasgow grew.
Local residents, including many of those who have been involved in the project throughout the consultant and construction, attended the official opening.
Glasgow’s Lord Provost Bob Winter, said: "Molendinar Park is a great new local amenity for the area. This park is an excellent example of what can be achieved when local people are involved in creating a community space that is individually tailored to their needs.
“Everyone involved in this project should be very proud of what they have achieved with this fantastic new public amenity.”
Among the changes on site is the transformation of the pond that once was on the site into a zig zagging thread of water that now runs into and through the site from a natural waterfall.
The park also has a 400 metre informal running track which will circulate throughout the main site, with the inclusion of a formal six lane running track on the central sports strip.
The formation of structural moundings and associated landforms has created an amphitheatre for the staging of local events.
The new park also has half courts for ball games and an area for BMXs and skateboarding which are already been well used by locals.
As well as creating much needed recreational facilities, it is envisaged that the new park will improve the biodiversity and give the local community access to urban greenspace.
The project was managed through the Greenspace programme of Glasgow City Council’s Development and Regeneration Services (DRS) department.
DRS officers worked with a number of organisations to bring this project to fruition including the Local Community Council, the council’s Land and Environmental Services, Glasgow Life, Glasgow North Regeneration Agency and Glasgow Community Planning Partnership.
