Stirling Council has welcomed the announcement from the Scottish Government of an extra £934,000 of funding to accelerate the building of social rented homes across Stirling
The extra funding will allow local Housing Associations to accelerate the new build programme over the next five years
Stirling Council Portfolio Holder with responsibility for Housing Strategy Councillor Alasdair MacPherson said: "This is very welcome news from the Scottish Government. This extra funding will allow more homes to be built in the local area over the next five years adding to the ambitious building programme of social rented homes currently underway by this Council and local Housing Associations which is good news for over 4,000 people on the Council house waiting list."
The money has become available as a result of "Barnett consequentials" and the freeing up within the Affordable Housing Investment programme (AHIP).
"We are just at the start of our new build programme, which is primarily aimed at providing the essential housing for elderly, disabled and homeless people and this new money will not only bring new hope to people desperate for a home but will inject much needed confidence in the construction industry and support building apprenticeship opportunities for our young people,” added Councillor MacPherson.
In April 2010 the Council made a third successful bid for money to build new council houses and now has enough money to provide a total of 127 new homes across the Stirling Council area over the next two years.
