A New York-style store design has proved so successful on the Scottish High Street that a card retailer is now planning to roll out the concept across its other units.
Sales at Scribbler Glasgow – a 500 sq ft glass-fronted outlet at 176 Buchanan Street - rocketed to make it the third best performing outlet in the UK-wide card and greetings chain just months after it opened with its new fit-out.
Jon Isherwood, Art Director of the Isherwood Design which designs and fits all Scribbler interiors said: "We took a few risks when it came to designing the Glasgow store and tried things we had shied away from in previous store designs.
"The roof in the Glasgow outlet is much higher than normal stores, and has quite a long floor space in proportion.
"The shape reminded me of stylish outlets I had seen in New York, where they use every last square inch because retail space is so expensive there.
"The Big Apple is famous the world over for its edgy and entrepreneurial spirit, so we thought we should take a leaf from the New Yorkers’ book and make the most of the high ceiling."
Mr Isherwood said the high ceilings created a huge sense of space in the store but equally they had to fill that area.
"We used innovative rigging system and specially designed banners to make eye-catching use of the space," he continued.
"We had wanted to do something similar when designing the store in London’s famous Westfield shopping centre - but the landlords would not let us do it at first– but now they have seen how well it works in Glasgow they want the same kind of fittings installed there."
The entire Glasgow store was fitted in three weeks for £70,000 including design and implementation.
