Inverclyde Council’s Planning Board has approved the £10m Arts Guild which will provide state-of-the-art facilities on Greenock's waterfront.
The building will be built opposite the historic Custom House and will boast a 500 seat main auditorium, a 100 seat performance space, four meeting rooms and a café.
Councillor Wilson, Chair of the Planning Board, said: "The Arts Guild has been a presence in Greenock since 1946 and hosts a range of arts events from music, drama and dance to comedy, festivals and visual arts.
"But their current home in Campbell Street is simply not up to scratch so it is wonderful news that they can now look forward to a modern, state-of-the-art new home."
Elliott McKelvie, Chairman of the Arts Guild said: "This announcement represents a watershed in our campaign to provide a flagship arts venue for Inverclyde."
Regeneration Convener Councillor Jim Clocherty added: "This is one of the Administration's flagship policies and the Council has committed up to £2.5m to ensure that this takes place. It is also hoped that this will be a focal point in the redevelopment of the historic waterfront harbours and will breathe new life in to the area.
"The building will be a vibrant, purpose built arts complex fit for the 21st century and will invigorate the arts within Inverclyde. This is another step towards making Inverclyde a better place to live and to work."
