Inverclyde Council's Planning Board has approved plans for 18 new flats in Port Glasgow.
The development at 2 Highholm Street will see a five storey block of two bedroom flats with underground parking built on the site.
There had been concerns raised at a previous Board meeting in August about access for emergency services vehicles and members agreed to carry out a site visit.
Board Chair Councillor David Wilson said: "This development of 18 flats with off street parking is particularly welcome during a recession.
"It will provide affordable private housing close to Port Glasgow town centre. Residents had expressed concerns about parking and access for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, but they came on the site visit and were satisfied appliances could gain access to any emergency. We would hope that construction on this vacant plot will start soon."
The proposed design is described as modern, with monopitch and flat roofed sections. The principal materials are render, facing brick, timber panelling and metal cladding.
The site was formally occupied by a disused social club which was demolished following a fire.
