Sibbald Training hosted a successful open day at its Blackridge headquarters on Friday, 20 June, drawing over 50 attendees from major contractors, local authorities, and utility companies.
The event provided a comprehensive showcase of the company's industry-leading training facilities and broad range of courses.
Attendees had the opportunity to tour the 18-acre purpose-built facility, which boasts 19 classrooms and accommodates between 70 and 100 trainees daily. Guests engaged directly with instructors and witnessed live demonstrations across key training disciplines. Sibbald Training, offering approximately 200 different courses, was joined by partners HSS Training and SpanSet, facilitating specialist training while maintaining high standards.
Director John Sibbald explained that the event aimed to demonstrate the scope and quality of training available on-site. "Health and safety standards continue to rise, and we've adapted to that demand," John stated. "Over the past 10–15 years, we've expanded well beyond plant training to serve sectors such as utilities, engineering, manufacturing, and logistics."
Live demonstrations included Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) rescue using scissor lifts and booms, working at height and rescue techniques, confined space training within 35 meters of underground tunnels, and the operation of telehandlers, including the permanently based Roto telehandler. Lifting operations utilising their Liebherr crane and Hi-ab plant lorry were also showcased, alongside street works training covering cable/service avoidance, signing, lighting, guarding, and excavation.
The open day was specifically targeted at decision-makers such as training coordinators, health & safety officers, and procurement teams. "It was important for them to see the facilities first-hand," John noted, emphasising that "When quotes look the same on paper, quality and experience are what truly set us apart."
John highlighted that a practical, hands-on approach remains central to Sibbald's training philosophy. While offering e-learning and virtual courses, he affirmed that their foundation is "still practical, real-world experience."
In addition to expanding its course offerings, Sibbald Training has invested in new technology, including a custom-built CRM system launched this year. This system provides clients with secure online access to training records, bookings, and documentation. Recent new courses include novice and transitional ROTO telehandler training, alongside in-house lorry loader training now available under NPORS and CPCS, with ALLMI accreditation to follow.
Sibbald Training is also actively involved in the Skills Development Scotland (SDS) Modern Apprenticeship Fund, supporting apprentices through plant, lifting, and general construction operative qualifications. John, a former president of the Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA), voiced concern over growing skills shortages and rising employment costs across the sector. "The industry is facing a significant challenge," he concluded, expressing hope that events like the open day will encourage employers to invest in proper training and the next generation of workers.
