Investigative works are set to begin at the historic St Fittick's Church in Aberdeen on Monday, 28 July 2025. These crucial site investigations, lasting six to eight weeks, are a collaborative effort by ETZ Ltd, Aberdeen City Council, and Historic Environment Scotland, forming an early step in ETZ Ltd's Community & Coast programme.
The objective of these works is to identify necessary conservation improvements to ensure the site's historical importance is preserved for future generations. St Fittick's Church, founded between 1189 and 1199 and scheduled as a monument in 2002, will see temporary internal access restrictions during this period.
An initial visual appraisal in December 2023 indicated that while the existing cement render appeared largely intact, the condition of the underlying stonework remained unknown. The upcoming investigations will involve the removal of four areas of cement render to allow specialists, including an archaeologist, conservation engineers, and Historic Environment Scotland, to assess the walls. The removed render will then be reapplied using hot mixed lime.
This assessment will form the basis for developing a comprehensive conservation proposal for the church, ensuring it continues to reflect and serve the heritage of local and wider communities.
