A multi-million pound contract awarded by ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) to turbine maintenance specialist Ecocel has facilitated the opening of a new, larger facility in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, and the creation of 10 new jobs.
Under the terms of the contract, Ecocel will manage the parts and supply for the installation of the Gamesa Pitch control system across 204 of SPR's wind turbines. This system adjusts the angle of turbine blades to maximise energy capture and efficiency. The upgrade is expected to significantly enhance the efficacy and reliability of the turbines, contributing to increased renewable energy production.
Ross Galbraith, Onshore Construction & Operations Director at ScottishPower Renewables, said: "We're delighted to work with Ecocel on this critical upgrade project. Their commitment to excellence and innovation aligns with our dedication to advance and maximise renewable energy generation. This partnership not only enhances our infrastructure but also supports local economic growth and job creation."
To accommodate the work generated by the contract, Ecocel has expanded its operations by moving to a new, larger facility in Kilwinning and has already recruited 10 additional staff members, including four trainees. The company has further plans to hire an additional six wind technicians.
Jamie Glover, Managing Director of Ecocel, commented: "We're thankful for the opportunity to help SPR enhance their Gamesa fleet in the UK and this further solidifies our relationship with them. We look forward to working with them on future projects that will bring more jobs to Ecocel and new blood into the Industry."
The expansion has been welcomed locally. North Ayrshire Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Green Environment and Economy, stated: "This is fantastic news for Kilwinning and the whole of North Ayrshire and we are delighted to be supporting ScottishPower Renewables and Ecocel in their efforts to drive sustainable energy solutions."
This contract and subsequent facility expansion underscore a positive development for the renewable energy supply chain in Scotland, promoting local employment and enhancing the operational capacity of existing wind energy assets.
