Breedon Group plc has invested £4m in a new, fully operational asphalt plant in Northumberland, expanding capacity to serve customers across the county and into the Scottish Borders. The facility will manufacture a full range of asphalt materials, including Breedon Performance Asphalt.
Delivered over 12 months, the project involved demolishing the former decommissioned plant, reconfiguring the site and constructing a modern replacement. Following initial accreditation, the plant is now producing and is designed with sustainability in mind.
The site runs on LPG for a cleaner fuel burn and reduced carbon output and is both Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) and RAP-enabled, allowing Recycled Asphalt Planings from existing roads to be incorporated into new mixes. It also features 120 tonnes of mixed material storage to speed up turnarounds and cut waiting times for customers and haulage.
James Macintosh, Area Director at Breedon, said: "Bringing asphalt production back to Cragmill signifi cantly strengthens our ability to supply customers across Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, giving us greater capacity and fl exibility in this part of the region.
"The location means we can provide a strong service to customers, while also supporting our Surfacing Solutions teams with the materials they need to deliver projects across the region."
"Importantly, the new plant also gives us room to scale. We can increase production as demand grows and continue to broaden the range of materials available from Cragmill over time."
Close to the Scottish border, the plant will serve customers across Northumberland, extending south towards Newcastle and north into the Scottish Borders. Offering both collection and delivery, and with the capability to operate 24/7, the facility is set to improve flexibility and product availability across the region.
