SP Energy Networks is inviting residents in Fife to share their views on proposals for Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4), a major new high-voltage electricity transmission project.
EGL4 is a joint venture between SP Energy Networks and National Grid, designed to transport enough electricity to power approximately 2 million homes.
The project involves a 530km high voltage direct current (HVDC) bidirectional subsea cable running from near Kinghorn in Fife to Norfolk in England. In Fife, a 16km underground cable route will connect the subsea cable's landfall point to a new converter station planned next to the existing Westfield substation at Ballingry.
EGL4 is one of four such subsea electricity "superhighways" planned along Britain’s east coast. Collectively, these links are projected to transport enough clean, green electricity to power up to 8 million homes, playing a crucial role in helping the UK achieve its climate targets, significantly enhancing energy security, and promoting economic growth.
This current consultation marks the second round of public engagement focused on the proposed converter station, the underground cable route, and the landfall point in Fife. The proposed converter station will consist of several buildings housing specialised electrical equipment, along with outdoor electrical infrastructure and ancillary developments such as access routes, landscaping, and drainage systems. From the converter station, approximately 14km of underground HVDC cable will be installed to reach the landfall site north of Kinghorn. SP Energy Networks has stated that all land temporarily affected by the underground cable installation will be fully reinstated upon completion.
To facilitate public feedback, a series of drop-in consultation events are scheduled for May, complemented by an online consultation running from Monday, 12 May to Friday, 06 June 2025.
The drop-in events will be held at the following locations and times:
• Tuesday, 13 May 2025: 2pm to 7pm at Auchtertool Village Hall
• Wednesday, 14 May 2025: 2pm to 7pm at Benarty Centre in Ballingry
• Thursday, 15 May 2025: 2pm to 7pm at Kinghorn Community Centre
A further consultation feedback event is anticipated later in the summer. Residents are encouraged to attend these events or participate online to learn more about the EGL4 project and provide their input on the proposals.
