£3m Bridge Renewal Complete In Killiecrankie

Network Rail has completed a £3 million project to renew the Rannoch Road bridge, located off the B8079 in Killiecrankie.

The six-month programme, which began in September 2024, involved replacing the 128-year-old single-span structure that crosses the Highland Main Line.

The project is part of Network Rail's ongoing bridge modernisation programme, which aims to improve the reliability and performance of Scotland’s Railway, with over £1.95 billion being invested in infrastructure improvements.

Susan Menmuir, Network Rail scheme project manager, said: "This vital work is part of a wider, rolling programme of improvements that are essential to running a safe and reliable railway for passengers and freight customers."

The project faced challenges, particularly during the winter months when work was carried out amidst several storms. However, Network Rail and its contractor, AmcoGiffen, managed to complete the work successfully.

"The project wasn’t without its challenges, especially as much of the work was delivered throughout the winter and in the face of several storms. However, both Network Rail and our contractor AmcoGiffen have a wealth of experience of working under these conditions," Menmuir stated.

The bridge renewal is expected to extend the structure's lifespan by approximately 120 years. "Renewals such as this help to protect the lifespan of our assets, as we won’t need to do work on this scale again for about 120-years," Menmuir added.

To minimise disruption to local residents, a temporary bridge was installed, maintaining all-vehicle access throughout the construction period until the new bridge was opened to traffic.

Menmuir also acknowledged the community's patience and the support of the local community council. "We do appreciate the impact our works can have on communities and I want to thank the residents of Killiecrankie for the patience shown over the last six months. Also, the community council, who played an essential role in helping us keep the community informed as the work progressed."
