£3.53m Gaelic School Refurbishment Named

The name of Edinburgh’s new £3.53m Gaelic Primary School refurbishment has been revealed.

'Bun-sgoil Taobh na Páirce' or 'Parkside Primary School' is the chosen title of the city’s new Gaelic school.

The name was devised by pupils of the Tollcross Primary Gaelic Unit.

The young people were helped to create a name for the new development by a steering group comprising of teachers, officers and parents.

Extensive refurbishment is currently underway and is being funded by a capital grant of £1.8m from the Scottish government.

The remaining £1.73m is being being financed through prudential borrowing, with £1.275m of this amount funded through the provision of ongoing revenue support of £100,000 from the Scottish Government.

The new school will take the place of the former Bonnington Primary. It will also replace the existing Gaelic Medium Unit (GME) which is based within Tollcross Primary School.

The GME unit’s roll has been increased in recent years as demand for GME education has grown.

Education, Children and Families Convener Paul Godzik said: "Parkside Primary School will be a very welcome addition to our list of schools and we are already looking forward to it opening its doors next August. I think ‘Parkside’ is a good choice and I’d like to thank all the staff, pupils and teachers involved in the naming of the school."

The new school is due to open in August 2013. Registrations for next year’s P1 intake will begin in December and a new Head Teacher will also be appointed.
