Carnegie Leisure Centre Refurbishment On Track

Members of Fife Council's City of Dunfermline Area Committee have seen the significant progress which has been made with the refurbishment of Carnegie Leisure Centre first hand.

Melvin Provan, the Council's lead Architect, Rob Tait from project managers Turner & Townsend and Wendy Watson, Customer Services Manager with Fife Sports & Leisure Trust (who will operate the refurbished facility on behalf of the Council) gave Councillors a guided tour on Friday 21st August so they could see the impact of the development to date.

Recent work has included careful demolition of a 100 year old swimming pool tank using special concrete breaking robots in order to preserve the original Edwardian surrounds, including fragile Grade B listed cast iron roof columns.

Councillor Brian Goodall, Strategic Chair of the Council’s Housing & Communities Committee, said: "It's been great to see the work underway at Carnegie Leisure Centre. Coupled with the video walk-through and artist’s impressions previously presented to the Area Committee, we’re beginning to get a real picture of what this project will deliver. "The Council is investing more than £50 million in sport and leisure facilities in Dunfermline, Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy and this £17 million refurbishment of Carnegie Leisure Centre is a very real example of how Fife Council is delivering on one of its 'Big 8' priorities of improving sport, leisure and cultural opportunities in Fife."

Councillor Joe Rosiejak, Chair of the City of Dunfermline Area Committee, said: "I was particularly keen to see how the refurbishment of Carnegie Leisure Centre was progressing. It's an exciting project that will deliver an impressive facility in the heart of Dunfermline and in a location which both preserves the original Andrew Carnegie legacy and which will help contribute to the wider regeneration of the City Centre.

"When it opens in early 2011, Dunfermline will offer both residents and visitors alike a modern, state-of-the-art leisure centre sitting behind a unique Edwardian façade."
