Sustainable Travel Funding Boost

Transport Minister Keith Brown has today announced details of more than £30million of funding for sustainable transport.

A new £13million cash injection from the budget consequentials will help get more and more Scots into healthier forms of travel such as cycling and walking.

And Ministers have decided how £18.75million will be spent in the next phase of the Scottish Government’s Future Transport Fund.

Both allocations together will benefit cycling and walking initiatives throughout Scotland and provide extra support to help promote the uptake of electric and other low carbon vehicles.

On top of the £11million FTF cash already announced for the next two years, the fund will now see £5million go to low-carbon vehicles, a further £4.5million to cycling infrastructure, £4.75million to green buses and £4.5million on freight modal shift in 2014/2015.

Transport Minister Keith Brown announced the investments as he met with sustainable transport group Sustrans.

Mr Brown said: "I am resolute in my commitment to promoting active travel as a way of encouraging healthier lifestyles and of helping meet our challenging aspirations for carbon reduction, as well as supporting the development of sustainable communities.

"This new £13million funding will allow a number of projects throughout Scotland to continue their fantastic work in engaging people in healthier and more environmentally efficient ways of getting around.

"Since 2007, we have invested over £83million in cycling and walking infrastructure and the wider promotion of active travel."
