Aberdeen City Council has joined a planning scheme to improve and speed up the process of dealing with certain types of applications affecting category B-listed buildings.

This is part of a range of reforms aimed at strengthening the partnership between Historic Scotland and local authorities across Scotland and will allow the council to issue listed building consent for certain kinds of works to B-listed buildings without the need to notify Historic Scotland.

Historic Scotland Deputy Chief Inspector Barbara Cummins said: "This scheme supports the Government's drive to modernise the planning system and reduces duplication between Historic Scotland and local authorities.

"Aberdeen City Council will now be able to deliver listed building consents more quickly to applicants, allowing Historic Scotland to focus on applications where it can add value as well as providing more strategic advice to planning authorities, applicants and Scottish Ministers."

Councillor Callum McCaig, Vice-Convener of Enterprise, Planning and Infrastructure added: "Speeding up the process of listed building consent is in the interest of Aberdeen City Council, Historic Scotland and the general public. It will allow for certain works to be undertaken with less delay, whilst at the same time ensuring that the city's unique historic environment is protected."
