Renewable Energy Sector to Consider Pedal Power

Mass participation expected in new Renewables Race mountain bike challenge - Saturday 15 May - Fort William.

Fort William based Highland Wood Energy (HWE), Scotland's leading wood heating specialists, have teamed up with No Fuss Events, organisers of the hugely popular Benromach 10 Under the Ben cross-country mountain bike race, to develop a special competition to celebrate the Renewable Energy Sector and pedal power.

The challenge is essentially a 'race within a race' as mountain bike riders involved in renewable energy projects throughout the UK and further afield are invited to sign up for the inaugural Renewables Race on Saturday 15 May; joining up to 1000 off road riders, elite racers, weekend warriors and have a go heroes of all fitness levels and riding abilities taking part in 10 Under The Ben.

The Race is run on an endurance format with riders competing as a solo or in relay teams of two, three or four to see who can complete the most laps of the 10 mile (approx) course in 10 hours.

As the 2010 course passes within twenty metres of the Highland Wood Energy Headquarters the biomass heat specialists will provide excellent hospitality all weekend; from race registration and a drinks reception on the Friday evening to a post race barbecue and after party on Saturday night. HWE will also provide some fantastic prizes with the fastest renewable riders earning invaluable bragging rights for the year ahead.

It is especially apt that the Renewables Race is being staged in Leanachan Forest, near Fort William, as this woodland already plays a major role in supporting renewable energy. Low value wood from the forest is currently used to heat local schools, Lochaber College, the Community Centre and the Fort William Medical Centre.

Frazer Coupland, from No Fuss Events said: "We are delighted that 10 under the Ben and Highland Wood Energy will host the inaugural Renewables Race. Our events are great for bringing likeminded people together and what could be better than riding a superb course and having a fantastic time into the bargain.

"Don't worry if you don't look good in lycra; in 2009 we had 900 riders of all shapes and sizes taking part. Competition is up to the individual and it's all about taking part, having as much fun as possible in a very relaxed environment and at your own pace."

The entry for the Renewables Race costs the same as 10 Under The Ben and as well as the additional prizes and hospitality from HWE, participants will also be eligibile for the overall race prizes so for any individuals or teams with big ideas fear not.

The only caveat on entry is that all team members (whether that is 1, 2, 3 or 4) need to have involvement with the renewable energy sector.
