Work has begun to clear a landslip on the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful road on the west coast of Scotland.

Several hundred tonnes of material has been displaced from the hillside and is now resting on the A83 in Argyll.

Earthmoving equipment has been deployed and a Geotechnical Engineer has inspected the area.

The road is closed between Ardgartan and the top of the Rest and Be Thankful. There is a diversion route via Dalmally and Crianlarich, adding around an extra 55 miles to the journey.

Two years ago the road was closed for several weeks after a landslide at exactly the same spot.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland Road contractor Transerv's Martin Spicer said: We've got another 100 to 200 tonnes of material to shift and we've got a fleet of wagons to do that.

"Later today, as the conditions continue to improve, we'll be going up onto the slope to assess the stability of the material that remains up above the road, and also the embankment supporting the road, before we can make any kind of assessment as to when it can reopen."
