Grant Promises Better Dunbar Centre

The Scottish Government has awarded East Lothian Council £416,850 to improve Dunbar town centre.

The total project cost will amount to £880,700 when matching funds from the Council are added.

The funding came through the government's Town Centre Regeneration Fund and will help bankroll five projects including affordable housing, building conservation and an eight-camera town centre CCTV system.

The projects are

Purchase of two sites for affordable housing at Abbeylands and 38-44 High Street, £180K
Demolition of a dilapidated building and ground restoration at Abbeylands, £54K
External repairs to an historic tenement at 82-84 High Street, £421.7K
Installation of an eight-camera CCTV system, £225K

Environment spokesman Councillor Paul McLennan said: "I am delighted that the Scottish Government has met our application for Dunbar in full and that we will be able not only to improve the appearance of the High Street but make it safer and eventually provide affordable homes to bring more residents back to its historic heart.

"This is certainly good news for Dunbar, although I am disappointed that grant applications for North Berwick and Musselburgh were unsuccessful."
