Unusual plans to transform a disused water reservoir into a round house have been unanimously approved by Aberdeen councillors.

The redundant reservoir off Auchmill Road, close to Bucksburn Primary School, will be converted into an energy-efficient four-bedroom house using natural building materials from sustainable sources or recycled materials.

The house will be built using the circular structure of the reservoir for the ground floor, which will contain a games room, gym, sauna, wet room and office or bedroom, and a double garage.

An additional floor will be built onto the reservoir, with a dome on the roof. The first floor would contain a combined dining, living and kitchen area and four bedrooms.

Planning convener Scott Cassie said: "This makes very good use of a redundant reservoir, and preserves part of the city's history.

"With the appropriate, important conditions attached to the planning permission this energy-efficient property, which is of a high standard, will make a real statement. I look forward to seeing the finished article."
