East Dunbartonshire Council's £4.5m investment in road improvements this year has begun to take shape.

Road works planners have worked hard to ensure as little disruption as possible but there will still be delays for drivers as they encounter the increased number of worksites delivering the improvements.

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of the Development and Environment Committee, said: "Inevitably it is short term pain for long term gain for motorists. We are asking them to bear with us through this huge investment programme that will see better roads for East Dunbartonshire.

"Through this year and next motorists will not just see major improvements on the existing roads in East Dunbartonshire, but also see the continued delivery of the Kirkintilloch Link Road which will give a direct and easily accessible route connecting Kirkintilloch, Lenzie and the surrounding areas to the national motorway system."

In April the Council announced a budget of £4m to be spent on a major programme of investment in roads, pavements, drainage and flood mitigation over the next year.

Then one month later we were able to announce a further £460,000 for improving roads, pavements, lighting and road safety across the area. This money came from part of the "economic stimulus" money Scottish Government permitted to be brought forward from future budgets.

Between now and mid-October there will be a series of works across East Dunbartonshire as the council deliver its £4.5m programme and works on the £21m Kirkintilloch Link Road continue.

Works during July include new road construction for Scottish Prison Service, resurfacing works for East Dunbartonshire Council and bulk earthwork operations.
