Cllr Alasdair Macpherson of Stirling Council is due today to put forward a motion to ban evictions.
Graeme Brown, Director of Shelter Scotland, the housing and homelessness charity, said: "We welcome this positive step towards reducing evictions in Stirling. Our recent research into evictions by councils and housing associations demonstrated the benefits of avoiding eviction."
Mr Brown believes with the grip of the recession tightening its hold, action is needed to prevent families falling into debt in the first place.
"We hope that other local authorities will look to Stirling and move towards a presumption against eviction except as a last resort," he said.
