Work has begun on a new Waste Transfer Station on the outskirts of Wallyford.

The construction marks second phase of work at Kinwegar on the A199. The first phase was the construction of Kinwegar Recycling Centre.

East Lothain Council awarded building firm McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd a £3.24m contract for the development of the transfer station that will include new sorting facilities, a weighbridge, external surfacing and fencing.

There will be staff facilities and an education suite to allow schoolchildren to visit the centre and learn more about waste. Work is due to be completed in early 2010.

Council's environment spokesman, Councillor Paul McLennan, said: "I'm pleased that we can progress with Phase 2 of the Kinwegar site, which will offer improved waste facilities. Being able to offer educational opportunities for pupils is also a great idea.

"Schools across the county have been leading the way in environmental awareness, witnessed by the number that have achieved Green Flag award through the Eco-Schools programme. Having a purpose-built space where pupils can visit and learn more about what happens to all the different materials we are able to recycle both at the kerbside and in our Recycling Centres will be of real interest."
