Burning Interest In Future Opportunities In Woodfuel In The Highlands And Islands

A fact finding event being held this week on how local businesses and individuals could benefit from using or working with woodfuel in the Highlands and Islands has already attracted over 50 participants.

The growing interest in the opportunities renewable energy can provide in the region has inspired Highlands and Islands Forest Industries Cluster (HIFIC) and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to run the free event at the Averon Centre in Alness on Wednesday (6 May 2009).

"HIE is pleased to be working closely with HIFIC in delivering such an important event. This is about sharing information and experience in the sector so local businesses can learn about and take advantage of the growing opportunities in the Biomass sector," said Colin Grant, of HIE.

Woodfuel's low carbon footprint is making it an increasingly popular choice for fuel and the event will provide a valuable networking event for anyone involved in, or considering involvement in, woodfuel boiler installation, supply and distribution of wood fuel, design and specification of commercial and domestic new build projects and those who may wish to supply services and raw material.

While the local wood fuel industry is still in the early stages of development the imminent opening of the new Balcas wood pellet plant in Invergordon has significant potential to foster confidence in the fuel supply and act as a catalyst for rapid market development.

A similar plant in Ireland created a significant market expansion and new opportunities for forest owners, timber processors, hauliers and those involved in the supply and installation of boilers.

The programme for the day will encompass a series of presentations during the morning exploring the current market for woodfuel in the region, supply chain opportunities, planning and building issues and financial assistance available for installation costs.

In the afternoon there will be optional site visits to the Alness Heritage Centre, which has recently installed a pellet boiler, and to the new SNH Offices in Golspie where Balcas will provide a demonstration of the tanker delivery method for wood pellets.
