Proposals for a new £55m secondary school to replace the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway on Lewis have received outline planning permission.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have agreed to grant the permission despite a warning from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that the proposed site is on the edge of the safety zone for the town's gas works.
A public inquiry into the plans for a new campus for the Springfield Road and Sandwick Road area could still be called by the Scottish Government.
If approved construction will begin in May 2010 with completion set for the start of the new term in August 2012.
