Interest Sought For Cremation Facilities In Aberdeenshire

Options to develop crematoria facilities within Aberdeenshire are being considered.

Following feedback from residents and undertakers Aberdeenshire Council are looking into providing a provision.

The council has over 200 burial grounds and cemeteries but no crematoria.

It means that people have to travel long distances to the Aberdeen City Council facility at Hazelhead, the Angus Council facility at Parkgrove Friockheim or a private facility in Clochan, Buckie.

The council has been holding discussions with undertakers who feel that their customers would welcome the provision of cremation facilities within Aberdeenshire.

Residents also expressed interest through a recent Citizens Panel survey.

Initial studies have been carried out and Aberdeenshire Council would now like to hear from individuals, groups or companies who are interested in working with the council in the provision and/or operation of a cremation facility or facilities.

Tom Mitchell, Head of Operations at Aberdeenshire Council explained: "Throughout the UK, over 70% of all recorded deaths are followed by cremation. The amount of travelling that family have to do to reach the crematorium adds to their distress at what is already a difficult time for them.

"It is early days but we know that there is interest in us developing such facilities which helps us to build a business case. We are keen to hear from companies, organisations or individuals interested in working with us to deliver these much-needed facilities."

Companies wishing to be considered for the proposal should register their interest in writing with Landscape Services, Harlaw Way, Inverurie, AB51 4SG by 24th April 2009.
