A public consultation on draft proposals to improve the streetscape in and around Aberdeen's historic Green has been launched.
The work is to be carried out as part of The Green Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) - a major conservation-led project, which will regenerate this area of the city centre.
The proposed works would result in a comprehensive restoration of the streetscape, including road and footpath surfaces, and also help manage the traffic in the area.
The Green and the surrounding area has been an under-performing part of Aberdeen for many years, suffering from a lack of investment compared to other parts of the city centre.
New developments in the city, such as the Union Square shopping centre on Guild Street, are likely to lead to increased business and social activity in this historical area.
The Green is near Aberdeen's bus and railway stations, and lies between the new retail centre and Aberdeen's main shopping area, and will be on one of the main routes between them.
The council received confirmation last year that it had been successful in a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for funding for a THI in The Green, which is being complemented by funds from the project partners - Aberdeen City Council, Scottish Enterprise and Historic Scotland.
The funding partnership will help to pay for repairs to property in the area, bring selected buildings back into use, and for the comprehensive restoration of the streetscape.
It is anticipated that the streetscape work will begin in the summer, subject to final confirmation of all the funding arrangements supporting this part of the THI.
For more information about the draft proposals visit www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/Consultations/cst_CurrentConsultation.asp.
The draft proposals may also be viewed on the eighth floor of St Nicholas House, Broad Street, Aberdeen, and at The Point on the ground floor of the same building.
Comments on the draft proposals will be considered in preparing the final proposals and will be reported to the planning committee when it is asked to approve the final version.
Any comments should be sent in writing, headed "The Green Public Realm Works", to Dr Margaret Bochel, Head of Planning and Infrastructure.
Responses can also be e-mailed with the heading "The Green Public Realm Works" to [email protected].
Strategic Leadership, St Nicholas House, Broad Street, Aberdeen, AB10 1BW.
Comments must be received by Monday 6 April, although the council say it would be "particularly helpful" if responses could be submitted earlier.
