Comhairle Moves Ahead With New Schools Project

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will make significant progress on the Western Isles School Project (WISP) this week as it agrees a site for the new Nicolson Institute.

In addition, following discussions with the Scottish Government initiated by Comhairle Vice-Convener Angus Campbell, the building of Balivanich School will be advanced whilst the more complex issues around the remainder of the WISP schools are addressed.

Both matters are due to be discussed at a meeting of the Comhairle's Policy and Resources Committee this week.

The Chairman of the Committee, Cllr Angus Campbell, said: "I am delighted that we are making real progress on the new schools issue and I look forward to decisions being taken this week that will mean we can proceed to the design stage for all 5 schools. The Comhairle is committed to delivering five schools and, providing the proposed timetable can be achieved, we are on course to do just that.

"I am also pleased that, following a request from local Councillor Martin Taylor and discussions with the Scottish Government, they have accepted that we are able to 'accelerate' the relatively straightforward project of Balivanich School."

The Western Isles Schools Project aims to build five schools; The Nicolson Institute, Sir E. Scott School, a new westside school and facilities at Point and Balivanich. Approximately 40% of pupils in the Outer Hebrides will benefit from the new build and refurbishment programme.
