The repaving of the last section of Friars' Vennel in Dumfries has been rescheduled for January and February 2009.

According to Dumfries and Galloway Council the contractor carrying out work on the Vennel has been let down by a supplier, who has failed to deliver some of the granite on time. As a result, Design Services recommended that the contractor should cease work until after the New Year.

The contractor has been instructed to remove all barriers and to put a temporary surface on the road so that people and vehicles can have access to shops. This work must be completed by Friday 24 October 2008.

Town Centre Regeneration Officer, Jon Mengham, said: "The plan was always for a section of the Vennel to be dug up before the granite arrived. This forward planning would assist in having the work finished before the end of November. However, this delay in material being supplied means that completing the work would run too close to the Christmas period, with the risk that the Vennel traders would be affected. So, a decision has been taken to stop the contractor working now and to have the work completed after Christmas and the New Year."
