Scottish Water is to further review its plans to improve the coastal environment of Campbeltown and help alleviate flooding in the town.

Improvements to the waste water treatment works and main pumping station in recent years have made a difference and it had been proposed to upgrade the system further. However, it is now clear that to comply with developing regulatory requirements additional short-term measures are required. This in turn means it would be appropriate to review the long term proposal to achieve the best holistic outcome.

Scottish Water is therefore withdrawing its application for a review by Scottish Ministers of previous SEPA discharge consent decisions.

Chris Wallace, Scottish Water's Director of Communications, said: "Protecting the environment of Campbeltown remains a top priority and all along we've been liaising with the community and other stakeholders on a way forward. We want to achieve the best possible outcomes with the results of our investment so it's important we make the right decisions taking into account all appropriate viewpoints to ensure value for money.

"We will keep the community and other interested parties informed. We intend to find the right solution for Campbeltown and progress it as quickly as possible."
