Mathers To Switch On Wave Turbine

Scottish Energy Minister Jim Mather will officially switch on a turbine made to harness wave power in Islay, Argyll and Bute.

The turbine designed by Inverness based Wavegen converts the action of Atlantic breakers into electricity which is fed straight into the National Grid.

The turbine was developed with support from the Scottish Government's Wave and Tidal Energy Support (Wates) scheme.

It has been installed at the Limpet facility.

The company has made plans to produce enough power for 1,500 homes by installing 40 of the turbines off Siader on Lewis in the Western Isles. This will also create a breakwater for boats.

Mr Mather said: "The Scottish Government is determined to help make Scotland a world leader in the development and deployment of wave and tidal technologies."
