Restoration Of Lower Northwater Bridge

To allow work on the restoration of the Lower Northwater Bridge over the river North Esk to continue, local motorists are being alerted to a road closure at the bridge this weekend.

Masonry repair works to the inside face of the parapets on the A92 Lower Northwater Bridge is programmed to finish on Friday 1 August. This will allow the removal of the existing temporary barrier.

To carry out work on the arches over the river the contractor will use a suspended gantry. This will be supported by concrete blocks beside the parapet on each side of the road.

To allow the removal of the existing barrier and the placing of the gantry supports, a road closure will take place between 11.30pm Friday 1 August until 6am on Monday 4 August. Signposting will be in place to warn motorists at the time.

During this period the contractors Makers UK Ltd will accommodate all emergency vehicles. A number of buses will also be able to cross the bridge whilst others will be diverted. Passengers should contact Stagecoach/Bluebird or M W Nicoll for further information.

The gantry will be moved to the second river arch at the beginning of September. A similar road closure will be required for that phase and further information will be available nearer the time.

Angus and Aberdeenshire councils have thanked bridge users for their patience and understanding during this project.

As the bridge is an A listed structure the extent of the work has been approved by Historic Scotland, who are providing a 25% grant towards eligible costs with Angus and Aberdeenshire councils paying for the remaining costs equally. The value of the works to be carried out by Makers UK Ltd is approximately £700,000.
