Proposals for the potential use of the land around the existing Earlston High School in the Borders are to be put out for public consultation.
A replacement high school, scheduled to open in autumn next year, is being developed on a nearby site enabling the existing land to be sold.
A report by the Scottish Borders Council said that housing would be the most appropriate use but added that some retail development might be acceptable.
A two-month period has been set aside to gauge public opinion on the potential use of the land.
