The Highland Council and the Business Improvement District Company are working together to address the need to make the best use of the enhanced street scene being created by Streetscape works.
A number of businesses are already making use of the refurbished streets by placing tables and chairs outside their premises in order to create a café style culture. However, businesses are reminded that prior to putting tables and chairs outside their premises or to using the street for the purposes of any advertisement, they must seek permission from the Council. Often, Planning permission is required and can be applied for by contacting the Area Planning and Building Standards Office on Church Street.
City Manager David Has said: "The health and safety of the public is of primary concern to the Council and businesses, therefore, officers will be undertaking a programme of guidance, and where necessary, enforcement of regulations to ensure that the public are able to safely enjoy the city streets.
"This means that anyone who has been using the streets without receiving permission from the Council, should make contact with the Area Planning and Building Standards Manager, as quickly as possible. Failure to do so may result in enforcement action being undertaken so everyone's co-operation is appreciated."
