Detailed design work for the Transport Scotland-funded project is currently being conducted by Galliford Try Rail and construction is expected to start on site shortly.

Carol Deveney, commercial scheme sponsor for Network Rail, said: "Galliford Try Rail has an excellent track-record in rail infrastructure projects and we have every confidence that the company will help us deliver a first-class station for the people of Laurencekirk."

The new station forms a component of the delayed Aberdeen Crossrail project intended to introduce new stopping services between Inverurie and Stonehaven.

David Doris, Transport Scotland project manager, added: "We welcome the awarding of this contract for the construction of Laurencekirk station as this marks real progress towards services returning to the area."
