Sustainable Communities Initiative Launched

The Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative (SSCI) was launched on Friday.

Local authorities, and their partners, will be encouraged to propose more sustainable communities as part of the solution to meeting housing requirements in their areas.

Proposals must be ambitious and innovative, addressing the needs of those on lower incomes and helping to create sustainable, mixed communities across the country.

The initiative is part of the Government's vision of more homes of all tenures, built to higher environmental and design standards.

The SSCI is one of the outcomes of the Firm Foundations housing consultation.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "This initiative aims to bring strong and innovative design and building principles into our settlements, and promote exemplars of how communities could live in the future.

"Sustainable communities are vitally important for our long term economic and social success.

"We hope that local authorities, landowners and developers play their part and contribute to the future sustainable growth of Scotland."

Finance Secretary John Swinney said: "The Scottish Government is committed to creating an enduring legacy of high quality, distinctive new developments.

"Sustainable communities will meet people's needs and aspirations, while protecting and enhancing the unique natural and built heritage of our country."

The SSCI is launched today following the statement in Parliament by Nicola Sturgeon on the outcomes of the Firm Foundations consultation on June 25, 2008.

Large or small scale proposals, whether for new build or for reshaping existing neighbourhoods, in rural or urban areas around the country, can all be considered as SSCI projects, reflecting the character and diversity of Scotland.

Residents in these communities will enjoy sustainable, adaptable designs, with low energy demands, helping the environment.

Developers will have the chance to create modern and innovative products, reflecting Scottish identity, to offer to the market.

Those intending submitting a proposal under the SSCI should notify the Scottish Government of their intentions by August 6, 2008, including an outline site plan.
