Campaigners seeking an upgrade to the A82 are to meet with the Scottish Government's petitions committee in Dumbarton.

Over 8,500 people have signed the petition calling for improvements.

There have been 22 people killed on the A82 in the past two years with a further 400 being injured.

Campaigners want the route which spans Glasgow to Inverness (taking in the Caledonian Canal, Glencoe and Loch Lomond) to be improved urgently.

So far only £16m which will fund only two projects - the by-pass at Crianlarich and a new junction at Pulpit Rock at Loch Lomond - has been committed.

A total of £90m is required for the full upgrade.

Highland councillor Brian Murphy, chair of the A82 Partnership, said there was simmering anger and resentment over the state of the road.

Any new spending on the A82 would be considered by the Scottish Government as part of the strategic transport projects review which is due to report later this summer.
