Film City Glasgow Gets The Go-ahead

Glasgow City Council's Executive Committee have authorised total expenditure of £907,000 to complete the third and final phase of the Film City Glasgow project, and to award the contract to Central Building Contractors Ltd, who issued the best bid for this stage of the project.

Glasgow City Council, Scottish Enterprise Glasgow and the European Regional Development Fund are funding the refurbishment of Govan Town Hall to create Film City Glasgow (FCG), a 65,000 square foot project that will meet all of the city’s needs in the independent film and broadcasting sector.

On offer at FCG will be Scotland's first Premiere Dolby Studio, a range of high-tech post-production facilities, workshop spaces, office spaces and a cafe. Existing facilities at FCG have already been used for films, including Hallam Foe.

Aedas Architects were appointed as lead consultation for phases two and three of the project, and has now completed the design brief and gained planning permission for the works related to the project. To complete the project and conform with EU procurement guidelines, the lead consultant had then to procure the final stage through a competitive tender process.

Five contractors submitted tenders in this process, and after consideration, Central Building Contractors Ltd were judged to have submitted the most competitive, offering best value to the Council. Aedas Architects will monitor the progress of works and project expenditure and report this to the GCC monitoring team.

Councillor George Ryan, Executive Member for Development and Regeneration at Glasgow City Council, said: "Film City Glasgow will be one of the best facilities of its kind in the UK, and yet another state of the art addition to Glasgow’s new media quarter. The project will undoubtedly attract more leading filmmakers to the city.

"The appointment of the contractor for the final stage of this project highlights the city's strength in the creative industries and the continued positive changes in Govan and the waterfront."
