SP Energy Networks has signed a contract with GE Vernova's Electrification Segment, one of its strategic delivery partners, to deliver the Windyhill 400 kV GIS project (DLUP). The agreement marks a significant milestone for the programme, achieved through collaboration across both organisations.
The new Windyhill gas-insulated substation will use SF6-free switchgear to reduce the network's carbon impact while maintaining the reliability and resilience needed to support the energy transition.
Because SF6 is among the most potent greenhouse gases, cutting its use is a key step in decarbonising electricity networks. GE Vernova's GIS uses C4F7N as an alternative to SF6, a proven approach deployed across Europe over the past decade.
As more renewable generation connects to the grid, gas mixtures containing C4F7N will help SP Energy Networks and other UK transmission operators deliver high-performing networks with a lower carbon footprint.
This investment aligns with SP Energy Networks' Sustainable Business Strategy and supports its RIIO-T3 Business Plan (2026-2031), focused on building a cleaner, stronger and more resilient transmission system to connect more renewables, enable Clean Power 2030, and create long-term value for customers and communities.
